Julie Clyde | The art of Artificial Intelligence

The development of artificial intelligence in the art world has been met with a mix of emotions. There are some who deem it not art and others who swear by it. All I know is that it has its place in the creative process. In the very early days when MidJourney first appeared, my friend and previous Fantasy Magazine Artist, Kris Kashtanova, introduced me to the new platform. For the record, they are now one of the leading creators and educators of AI and I am LOVING seeing their journey. Kris is now the first person to copyright an AI piece of work, their comic Zarya of the Dawn.

During those early days, I was trying to learn how to use words to generate and create what was on my mind. I spent HOURS in the rabbit hole typing, waiting, creating, and then repeating. I had the opportunity to work on storyboards for a film- an opportunity I’m
grateful for. Having the background I do, I was able to mix together all of my skills to bring the director’s ideas to life. I hope to do more movie and storyboard work soon as I fell in love with that during my time with the School of Motion over the summer. The next step with the School of Motion is learning the animation side to complement the design work.

Since then, I have been working on commissions, Fantasy Portraits, and bits and pieces for my store The Fantasy Collective store on Etsy. It’s a little dream of mine that has come to light after a long time of trying to piece together print-on-demand online to take myself out of the ordering process so that my time can remain where I want it to be… creating.

One of the storyboards from scene ten. I loved bringing in the fantasy background and themes to the film. Generating faces at this point in MidJourney was very hit-and-miss so working previously with photoshop helped immensely to balance the facial images.
